A free criminal background check can be obtained by to basic method: public records databases and search engines. Now, free is usually a good thing but there are some serious pitfalls to beware of when conducting a free background check.

Pitfall #1 Data

One of the things that people fail to take into consideration is the huge amount of data that must be sifted through in order to find the nuggets of information you are looking for. For example, if you use your favorite search engine to search through police records on a particular name you will quickly discover that unless the persons name is totally unique you will have results that would take you days or weeks to properly scrutinize.

Pitfall #2 Cross Reference

This is because free online searches are not set up to cross reference the data obtained. This leaves this rather laborious task up to you. It is a tiresome task and if you are not careful you will miss some critical information that change results drastically, such as a missed felony under an alias, or not properly searching adjacent jurisdictions.

This will probably leave you with one of two mindsets; you will either drudge through the mountains of data in the hopes that some newspaper somewhere published the data you are looking for. Or you will spend a few hours getting nowhere and simply call it quits.

Both scenarios are dangerous.

The Suspicion Or Need

This is because you began your free criminal background check because you had a suspicion; either your gut was telling you something or you observed some suspicious activity, or you just want to be sure that you or a family member is going to be save around a person you know too little about. Either way you need to know if the person you are dealing with has a criminal history if for no other reason that to ease your mind. You certainly do not want any “oops” scenarios to happen where you wished you had followed through on a simple check.

Be encouraged to find out the truth, and ensure that the person you are checking on has the character traits you are comfortable with. Make certain there are no felonies
