The plain truth is that very few items advertised as being free are actually free. The ring tones are one example. People meet people online and get to know them through email and texting and so on, yet they have no assurance that the individual in any way resembles the personage that exists in the email world. So anyone venturing into online meeting for dating purposes (or old fashioned classified ads) would be well advised to get enough from the contact so that their identity can be verified, then by all means go to a professional (paid) criminal records check and skip the fly-by-night operators who offer "free" services.
If you need someone to babysit while you are out, if you want to get some information on a day care operator, or even if you want to double-check the character of someone who will do in-home pet care while you are on vacation, it pays to play it safe. If you want to feel safe about your children in the care of a sitter, or want to make sure your house isn't ransacked by a dog care provider who isn't who he said he is, it's worth the money to go with a professional.
